Do rep ranges actually matter?
Fives for strength, tens for size, twenties for tone. Two of those three are wrong. Here is what load really changes, and what it doesn't.

Every gym in the world runs on the same folk taxonomy. One to five reps builds strength. Eight to twelve builds size. Fifteen-plus builds "tone" and endurance. It is tidy, it is memorable, and it is about one-third correct.
The part that survived twenty years of research is the strength half. The size half did not.

The experiment that broke the pyramid
The cleanest version of this test compares a heavy protocol against a light one, matched for sets and both taken to failure. It has now been run many times, in trained and untrained lifters, on machines and free weights, over eight to twelve weeks. The pattern is consistent enough to be boring.

Read the two columns separately, because they say different things.
Size is flat across the range. Whether you did eight hard reps or twenty-five hard reps, the muscle grew about the same amount. This is the finding people refuse to believe, and it has replicated repeatedly.
Strength is not flat at all. The heavy group got substantially stronger on the tested lift. Maximal strength is specific — it is partly muscle and partly a learned skill at high load, and you cannot learn a skill you never practise.
Effort
The catch in every one of these studies is that the light sets were taken to or near failure. Thirty easy reps is not equivalent to eight hard ones. It is not equivalent to anything.
Where the edges are
The range is wide but it is not infinite. Two things happen at the extremes.
Below about 30% of your max, growth genuinely falls off. There is a floor, and sets of fifty with a pink dumbbell are under it. High-repetition sets stop being limited by the muscle and start being limited by discomfort and circulation.
Above about 85% of your max, hypertrophy per set holds up fine but the cost rises steeply. Sets of three take longer to recover from, demand more rest, and accumulate joint stress much faster per unit of growth. You can build muscle on triples. It is just an expensive way to do it.

The eight-to-twelve convention survives not because it is magic, but because it sits in the cheapest part of the curve. It is heavy enough to be efficient and light enough not to hurt.
So use all of it
Once you accept that the middle is flat, rep ranges stop being a prescription and start being a tool for matching the load to the exercise.
Match the range to the movement
One default per lift type.
3–6 reps
Main barbell lifts
Squat, deadlift, bench, overhead press. Heavy work is where strength is actually built, and these are the lifts worth being strong at.
6–12 reps
Compound accessories
Rows, pull-ups, dips, leg press, split squats. The efficient middle — enough load to matter, not enough to wreck you.
12–20 reps
Isolation and single-joint work
Lateral raises, curls, leg curls, cable work. Small muscles handled with light loads and high effort. Joint-friendly and easy to progress.
15–30 reps
Anything that hurts to load heavy
Cranky elbow, sore knee, a shoulder having a month. Light and close to failure keeps the stimulus while the joint gets a break.
The tone myth, briefly
There is no rep range that produces tone. Tone is muscle you can see, which is muscle plus a body fat percentage low enough to reveal it. Sets of twenty do not sculpt, define, lengthen or shape anything. They build muscle — the same muscle sets of eight build.
If the goal is a leaner, more defined look, the levers are muscle mass and body composition. The rep range is not one of them.

Not a thing
The short version
Anywhere from five to thirty reps builds muscle, provided the set is genuinely hard. Heavy work builds maximal strength and light work does not. The middle of the range is where the cost-per-set is lowest, which is the only real reason to live there.
Pick the load that lets you do the movement well and take it near failure. That decision matters far more than which side of ten the number lands on.
